The architecture of a slow morning
Practice
You do not need a five-step optimization routine to start your day. In fact, optimizing your morning is often counterproductive. The goal of the morning is not to get ahead of the day's work; it is to establish the mental ground on which the work will be done.
The Principle of Silence
The most productive thing you can do when you wake up is nothing. The brain needs a transition period between sleep states and active problem-solving. By diving immediately into email, you hijack your own cognitive resources before they are fully online.
A Grounded Practice
- Wait before consuming: Give yourself at least 30 minutes before looking at a screen.
- Move slowly: Let your physical movements be unhurried.
- Sit with yourself: Five minutes of silence is a better foundation than hours of planned scheduling.
Try it tomorrow. It doesn't cost anything but restraint.
